What is a Hackathon?
This is the question most people ask when someone mentions a hackathon. The google definition is:
"A hackathon is a design sprint-like event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, and others, often including domain experts, collaborate intensively on software projects."

Okay, that's a lot to take in, but a simple definition is:

"A hackathon is where you have a limited amount of time to create something relating to a theme or a problem you want to solve using software development (coding) or hardware development (building)"

The difference with this hackathon is you do not need to know how to code to be successful. You can pitch an idea, similar to the Shark Tank concept, and still be successful. Coding is only optional.

Helpful Information
When you sign in ...
-
You will be greeted by a bunch of friendly students who are, above all, passionate about learning. We will give participants about 5 minutes to get signed on and join the call. The Welcoming Ceremony will begin at 7:05 pm, this is where the organizers and sponsors will speak to you about what is planned for the day. Some companies will be sponsoring tech challenges and workshops that pertain to their technology and will give a quick demo of how to use it; other companies might on to tell you about their internship programs. NSBE will then host the very first workshop to help organize teams. You’ll team up with some other students to have fun making something cool! You can make anything you want using whatever technology you’d like.

Hackathons aren’t just about winning prizes, they’re also about playing with awesome technology! There will also be fun activities being hosted throughout the day so that everyone can have a nice break from working.

What if I don't have an idea?
-
That’s normal. Most people don’t have an idea before they get to the event. But once you start talking to other people, you might come up with something great. You can also work with somebody else on their idea if you would like it. Some prizes for the event might help inspire some great ideas. Even if you don’t create a solution, there will be many workshops available for you to attend.

What if I don't want to present my hack?
-
You might think your hack isn’t impressive enough to present or it won’t win a prize so why bother? Don’t be silly! Hackathons aren’t about winning prizes or showing off. They’re about learning and playing with technology. Anything you create is worth sharing. Even if your hack doesn’t work or you couldn’t finish it, people like hearing about what you tried to do, what challenges you faced, what technology you use, and what you learned.

Will I annoy people if I ask them questions?
-
You’re not going to annoy anybody! These events are centered around learning and having fun! You are encouraged to ask questions. Everybody will be willing to listen to your questions and help you learn new things. Mentors from some top companies will be roaming around ready and waiting for your questions to help you out. If you can’t find somebody to help you, volunteers will also be checking on you periodically, they will find someone who can answer your question(s).
